Powerful Lean Certification program strengthens organization
Leader in full-service commercial aviation global Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO).

United Airlines has made Lean a corporate-wide priority with the objectives of creating a Lean culture committed to increasing quality and productivity throughout the organization. Since November 2005, a strategic team has been leading the charge for continuous improvement across United Services. As part of this priority, United Services turned to Manex to help ensure the consistent implementation of Lean through the development of a Lean certification program.

Working with the United Services leadership team, Manex developed a powerful, customized certification program to help participants learn Lean principles and tools to achieve measurable improvements. This program was based on a consistent standard developed by the leaders in manufacturing excellence - the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) and the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing. The certification program modeled MRO processes within the company to accelerate participant learning.

Significant results include:

  • 185 employees, representing all departments within United Services, complete the program
  • 8 sessions: each including 32 hours of Lean curriculum, 4 days of classroom lecture, multiple simulations and 3 days of Kaizen Events
  • Bronze Level Lean Certification Knowledge Certificates
  • Innovative Partnerships: Grants and university credits provided in partnership with San Mateo County Community College District.
