With inventory levels steadily increasing and floor utilization decreasing in the Floor Covering Installation Systems Division (FCISD), Orcon recognized the need to implement process improvements to address and reduce the complexity in their operations.

Having gained dramatic results from working with Manex in their Aerospace division, Orcon quickly embraced the recommendations provided to improve the FCISD manufacturing operation. As a first step, Manex held a one-week Kaizen Event to create a Value Stream Map for the manufacturing line. To ensure sustained results, the manufacturing team was trained and coached on Lean Principles and 5S Methods. As a result a Pull/Kanban inventory system was implemented to optimize inventory levels.

Inventory levels were reduced dramatically with a 66% reduction in work-in-process inventory and a 72% reduction in lead time. As a result, 245 feet of floor space was freed for efficient use with a 66% reduction in product travel distance.
