NAM Releases New Report on the Importance of Manufacturing

Image The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) released its seventh edition of The Facts About Modern Manufacturing. This report sets the record straight on a vitally important but misunderstood sector of our economy. By spotlighting mostly U.S. government data about today’s manufacturing, the report shows the reality of both the strengths and challenges facing this industry.

All too often the perception is that the heyday of U.S. manufacturing is in the past, but nothing could be further from the truth. Standing by itself, U.S. manufacturing would be the eighth largest economy in the world. There are six manufacturing pillars that support today’s U.S. economy, as the data in this report show.

  • Highest contribution to economic growth of any sector
  • Responsible for more than 70 percent of private sector research and development
  • Achieves a high productivity rate year in and year out
  • Contributes more than 60 percent of U.S. exports
  • Pays wages and benefits that are about 25 percent higher than in non-manufacturing jobs
  • Multiplies every dollar spent into an additional $1.37 in economic activity

SME WESTEC Lean Session Hosted by Manex was Sold Out

Izzy Galicia, Manex Vice President of Client Services, held an energetic session on “Driving Global Strength Through Lean” at the Society for Manufacturing Excellence's (SME) West Coast Connection, WESTEC, held on March 26th ñ 29th in Los Angeles, California. WESTEC is the largest North American machine tools and advanced manufacturing event.

This interactive session generated substantial interest, and included an in-depth presentation and discussion on thriving in a global economy with a culture of Lean. Attendees learned Lean strategies to accelerate productivity and innovation.

Manufacturers of all sizes are using Lean as a way to compete with products made in countries with lower labor costs. While many manufacturers have been on a Lean journey, there is still work to be done to transform disparate projects into programmatic initiatives that produce bottom-line results sustainable over the long term.

In the WESTEC session, Mr. Galicia shared real world examples of large-scale Lean implementations at Del Monte, United Services, and Silgan Containers. These examples illustrated the value of rapidly and consistently developing Lean knowledge to drive competitiveness. The session emphasized how this model can be leveraged not just for large companies, but also for small and medium sized companies.
